Applied Epidemiology Competencies Evaluation

CSTE is excited to provide evaluation tools for individuals and/or supervisors to assess their knowledge, skills and abilities across the 7 domains of the Applied Epidemiology Competencies (AECs). These tools can be used to identify areas for individual professional development and improvement. Supervisors and individuals can also compare their respective evaluations of that individual’s skills for use with performance reviews, assignment of professional development activities and consideration for promotion.

CSTE released the 2023 Applied Epidemiology Competencies to define the knowledge, skills and abilities for the role of an epidemiologist

How to complete the Evaluation

There are two evaluation assessments available – the Self Evaluation and the Supervisor Evaluation. The Self Evaluation provides the opportunity to assess your own knowledge, skills and abilities for each of the subcompetencies in the 7 AECs domains. The Supervisor Evaluation allows a supervisor to assess their supervisees’ knowledge, skills and abilities in each of the subcompetencies.

If you are assessing your own knowledge, skills and abilities in the Applied Epidemiology Competencies, select the Self-Evaluation. If you are assessing someone you manage and/or supervise, select the ‘Supervisor Evaluation’

Choose the tier that best represents your skill level for Domain I. The tiers are Foundational, Intermediate, Practiced and Advanced. The descriptions for each can be found below. If completing the Supervisor Evaluation, select the tier that best represents your supervisee’s skillset.

Read each sub-competency and rate your skill level from 1 (I am unaware or have very little knowledge of the skill) to 4 (I am very comfortable, considered an expert, and/or could teach this skill to others). If completing the Supervisor Evaluation, answer in regards to the skills of your supervisee.

For example: What degree are you able to independently identify diverse populations that may be significant to addressing factors affecting the health of a community?

1 = None (I am unaware or have very little knowledge of the skill)

2 = Aware (I am aware but have limited knowledge or ability to apply the skill)

3 = Knowledgeable (I am comfortable with my knowledge or ability to apply the skill)

4 = Proficient (I am very comfortable, considered an expert, and/or could teach
this skill to others)

NA = This sub-competency is not applicable or expected for the
position and/or tier being assessed

After you have rated yourself on all sub-competencies in the domain, you will be prompted to move to the next domain. You will again have the opportunity to select a tier for this next domain.

When you have completed the assessment for all 7 domains, you will receive an email report with your score results and interpretation guidance.
